Reimagining a Formal Dining Room

One of my favorite recent design projects was transforming this formal dining room into a space that feels warm, elevated, and timeless while still honoring the architecture of the home.

The original dining room design felt overly ornate and heavily detailed, which competed with the overall architecture of the home rather than complementing it. The space didn’t reflect the homeowners’ personality or the relaxed, approachable feeling they wanted for everyday living and entertaining.  The clients envisioned a room that felt more refined, warm, and timeless while still being comfortable and functional. They also needed better concealed storage, as the existing built-in curios felt visually heavy and no longer supported the way the family used the space.

The goal of the redesign was to simplify and soften the room by creating balance, warmth, and cohesion — allowing the architecture, textures, and thoughtful layering to work together in a more intentional and livable way.

BEFORE

Before: overly ornate

AFTER

After: updated, cleaner design and a more functional space.

The redesigned space now feels sophisticated, balanced, and welcoming.

By incorporating:

  • dramatic statement lighting

  • rich layered wall treatments

  • a less ornate fireplace with organic materials

  • an oversized rug for proper scale

  • warmer organic textures and tones

  • comfortable, easy-to-maintain dining chairs that better support everyday living and entertaining

  • concealed storage solutions for a cleaner, more functional space

…the room was completely transformed into a luxurious yet livable gathering space.

One of my favorite aspects of this project is how much softer and more inviting the room feels while still maintaining a timeless elegance and a strong connection to the home’s architecture.

Designer Tip

One of the simplest ways to elevate a dining room is proper scale. Oversized rugs, larger lighting fixtures, and thoughtfully layered textures help a room feel grounded, cohesive, and much more custom.
